The color is very dark, like you would expect from a heavily-sherried cask-strength malt. It opens with very sharp toffee and black walnut, almost a burnt-caramel, burnt raisins taste – reminiscent of Beinn Dubh The Black and Loch Dhu. The flavor profile evolves to a very, very dark chocolate (think 90+% cocoa) with a healthy dose of licorice – with a burnt-brown-sugar flavor, like the blackened marshmallows from an open wood fire. The legs are pretty thin, but the strong flavors provide a medium-long finish, with lingering licorice and a bit of wood smoke sweetness – more that of a cask-strength dram. It's interesting that the San Diego Distillery would opt for developing a single-malt that is unique to that of Beinn Dubh The Black and Loch Dhu, which are not overly-popular.
