Amarula Cream Liqueur is a 17% ABV (34 proof), 750mL cream liqueur from South Africa, made from the fruit of the wild African marula tree. The hand-harvested fruit is fermented and distilled, the marula spirit is aged for two years in French oak, and only then is it blended with velvety cream — a recipe produced by the Southern Liqueur Company, part of the Distell group. It is available to order online at Del Mesa Liquor.

The Cream of the Marula Harvest

The marula tree grows wild and uncultivated across sub-Saharan Africa and fruits just once a year, in summer; when the fruit ripens, its scent draws elephants to gather beneath the trees — the producer's own harvest signal, and the reason the elephant stands on the bottle. Local communities hand-gather the fruit for fermentation and distillation. The cream liqueur itself was first marketed in 1989, following the clear marula spirit launched in 1983. Find it on our liqueurs shelf, browse the wider spirits collection, or visit the Amarula vendor page.

Tasting Notes

Nose: Creamy caramel and toffee with vanilla and spice. Palate: Velvety and smooth — butterscotch and caramel lifted by a citrus, tropical tang from the marula fruit. Finish: Soft, fruity caramel.

How to Enjoy

Pour it over ice — the brand's preferred serve — or into coffee, cocktails and desserts wherever a silky caramel cream belongs.

Why is there an elephant on the Amarula bottle? Ripening marula fruit draws elephants to the trees, and their arrival signals that harvest time has come — the connection the brand is built on.
