An exceptional terroir for an outstanding rum!

The Helios distillery has launched a 21-year-old aged version of its Teeda craft rum. It was distilled in 1998 and bottled by the third generation of the Matsuda family.
Helios is the oldest distillery in Japan and started producing rum in 1961, in response to demand from the American army who were stationed there at the time.

This rum is distilled from local cane sugar molasses in a copper pot still. The sugar cane enjoys mineral-rich soils and a tropical climate, giving the rum a mineral, saline character. With a tropical climate and an average temperature of 22.5°C, this archipelago is the only place in Japan able to grow sugar cane.

This rum has spent 21 years maturing in new American oak barrels. It is the only product of its kind, with just 2,500 numbered bottles made.

Life changing

I recently visited Japan and we went to go visit various whiskey tasting rooms. We were on Okinawa and we walked into this place, it was beautiful and it was away from the cities. We tried the whiskeys and weren't terribly impressed. I finally saw in their back room where they had their whole story about using Okinawan sugar to make their rum and have for a very long time. Using Google translate we asked to try it, this rum made me realize that I could like rum. It is by far one of the most delicious things. My whole life I thought Captain Morgan's was all there was. This rum opened up an entire world too me.
