High Coast Berg Swedish Single Malt Whisky

Dark, dark, dark

I first tried the Swedish High Coast Alv about 3 years ago. Since then, I’ve been trying to find the Berg, which is the Pedro Ximénez sherry cask finished High Coast. They finally released it to the USA. First, drinking with the eye, it is a beautiful dark ruby red. The bottle states “no colour added”, which is definitely not needed. The flavors are as dark as the color, opening with intense dark cherries and dark chocolate – around 85% cocoa dark chocolate – very nice. The bitter chocolate is joined by a medley of dark berries – blackberries, raspberries, black currants, mulberries, etc. The legs are thick and clingy, delivering a long finish, revealing a bit of a tart tang of the berries, which complements the sweetness of the sherry and the bitterness of the dark chocolate perfectly. As I’ve said many times before, I have yet to dislike a dram that is finished in PX casks – another winner! Drink slow, drink long, drink a variety, drink often.
