Deanston Stout Cask Finish is a limited edition partnership between Deanston Distillery and New Holland Brewing Company. This scotch whisky uses barrels from Dragon’s Milk, a stout beer from the New Holland Brewing Company in Michigan, which uses bourbon barrels for maturation. These are then passed down to Deanston Distillery for a 6 month finish. The result is a golden hoppy single malt full of fruit and caramel notes.

I recommend this product

If you like a heavy stout, this is your dram

Deanston is one of my favorite scotches. New Holland Dragon’s Milk stout is one of my two all-time most-favorite beers (other is Lakewood Temptress). So, when Deanston announced they were finishing their scotch in casks that previously held Dragon’s Milk, I had to give it a try. I’ve never seen a scotch that is finished in a beer cask – especially, not one of my all-time favorite beers. As with all Deanston scotches, it is very smooth – especially for a 50+% ABV. Light and creamy, honey-lemon citrus and white pepper on the tongue, with spiciness and vanilla on the finish, which is quite long. At the end of the finish, when the spiciness recedes, you get the distinct flavor of Dragon’s Milk stout. Unfortunately, it is not available in Oklahoma, but I have it on my list for a backup bottle the next time I’m in Texas. I recommend it. Drink slow, drink long, drink a variety, drink often.
